Student Project
The Hawai’i Department of Agriculture’s Agribusiness Development Corporation (ADC), established in 1994, facilitates and provides direction for diversification of Hawaii’s agricultural industry. ADC’s goals include 1) transition former plantation land and water systems for diversified agriculture; 2) initiation of development of facilities and provide support as necessary for successful diversified agriculture; and 3) providing solutions to certain bottleneck issues facing the agriculture industry. The ADC has acquired 280 acres more or less in Whitmore, Oahu from the Dole Food Company, and has started work with the University of Arkansas Office of Sustainability and Community Design Center to prepare and develop an agricultural development Master Plan for this property.
At the core of this food hub are processing, packaging, housing, educational, and retail facilities that will help farmers to meet new Food Safety Standards, and support an agribusiness industry aimed at revitalizing Wahiawa and feeding our state. The University of Arkansas invited the University of Hawai’i School of Architecture to collaborate on the design of the Master plan, which initiated this multi-institutional collaboration.
